Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) was introduced by AICTE in February 2012, for Admission in management (MBA) and (MCA) institutes across India for selecting suitable candidates for admissions.

From 2016 onwards, CMAT will be held every year, in the month of January. CMAT is a computer based examination with 100 Questions with total 400 marks and has to be attempted within 180 minutes (3 hrs). The detailed Exam Structure with Marking System is as follows :

Section 1: Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation: 25 Questions & 100 Marks
Section 2: Logical Reasoning: 25 Questions & 100 Marks
Section 3: Language Comprehension: 25 Questions & 100 Marks
Section 4: General Awareness: 25 Questions & 100 Marks

Kindly note that the CMAT exam contains multiple choice questions and awards 4 marks for every correct answer, while it deducts 1 mark for every wrong answer. One can also skip and jump to any section or question during the test as there are no fixed timings for attempting individual sections. All 100 questions are in the above mentioned order. Additionally, the awarded score will be used by various Management institutes for their respective admission processes which will include Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

And in case of IT (MCA) Institutes, the awarded score will be considered by the institutes in candidate selection followed by counseling session which is the final admission process.

Eligibility Criteria : The eligibility criteria for taking the CMAT is that the student should either be a graduate from any discipline or should be in the final year of graduation.

The Admission Process

Stage 1: Aptitude Test (Online Test)

CMAT is a multiple choice questions test of 400 marks, consisting of 100 questions to be answered in three hours, with a negative marking of 1 mark for wrong answers.

The CMAT exam will test you in four different areas:

  1. Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation Ability (QA & DI): QA is a test of mathematical skills and problem solving ability covering Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry topics like Linear & Quadratic Equation, Simple & Compound Interest, Percentage, Profit & Loss, Number System, Time, Speed, Work & Distance, Inequalities, Permutation & Combination, Arithmetic Progression, Function, Statistics, Set theory, Ratio & Mixture, Data Sufficiency, Circle and Rectangle, Co-ordinate Geometry, Mixtures, Allegation & Mensuration. DI is a test of ability to analyses and interpret specific information from Tables, Activity Charts, Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Frequency Polygon and Graphs.
  2. Logical Reasoning Ability (LR): A test of Verbal, Analytical & Logical Reasoning skills on topics like Arrangement, Coding-Decoding, Series, Visual Reasoning, Deductive Reasoning, Blood Relation, Number/Letter Series, Direction, Venn Diagram, Syllogisms, Strong-Weak arguments, Clocks and Calendars.
  3. Language Comprehension Ability (LC): A test of English Usage and Comprehension which includes topics like Grammar, Vocabulary, Verbal Reasoning, Antonym/Synonym, Sentence Correction/Completion, Critical Reasoning, Short & Long Passage Comprehension, Syllogism, Arguments, Conclusions, Paragraph Completion, Jumbles, Analogy and Deductive Reasoning.
  4. General Awareness Ability (GA): Consists of General Knowledge covering topics like current affairs, economy, business, politics, history, geography, sports, events, awards, science, books and authors, economics, etc.

Stage 2: Personality Assessment

Further selection process comprising of Group Discussion and Personal Interview would exclusively dependent on the procedure laid down by the specific institute. This process is to assess every individual personality and fit. This stage includes:


Group Discussion: A panel of judges shall evaluate your performance in a group, while discussing a topic of current importance. Candidate's stress management, time management, decision making skills and group behaviour are tested in a group discussion.

Personal Interview: This is the final frontier of the process wherein panelists judge the candidate's attitude for management studies and also validate past academic records, work experience and co-curricular achievements.
